Ulysses is an amazing man with an amazing story.  He suffers from cataracts and macular degeneration in his eyes, so over the last several years, Ulysses has gone completely blind.  No longer able to perform his prior work duties, you can find him at the fisherman’s market on the docks selling styrofoam coolers in Rocky Point to those buying fresh shrimp and fish off the boats.

The new UthBuild houseThat is what makes this house, and this particular build, so special.  You see, Ulysses had a piece of property that has been in his family for ages just two blocks from the waterfront.  He has lived on this property in a one room clapboard 8 x 8′ hut with a piece of plywood for a door for the last several years… but not any more.

Today he is secure and comfortable in his new “mini-mansion” that is more than 3 times the size of his former “house” – and before we left, he had every square foot of it memorized.  We made sure as we walked him literally over every foot of the floor, hands on the walls, describing the doorways, what sides the hinges were on, what direction he was facing (N,S, E, or W), and how many steps it took to get from wall to wall.  It was an amazing experience to hear him respond with, “Yesss…. I SEE IT!”
